Match Preview- Newport County Vs Oldham Athletic

Updated: Mar 7

Newport County begin their 23/24 FA Cup campaign against National League side Oldham Athletic.

The Latics sit 10th in the National League, having one win in their last five games. Their most recent game was against Altrincham which ended in a 2-2 draw. The away side will be looking to cause an upset at Rodney Parade.

Latics manager Micky Mellon will be a familiar name to Newport fans, Mellon guided Tranmere Rovers to back-to-back promotions, one of them being in the 2018/19 League Two playoff final against the Exiles.

Micky Mellon joined Oldham just over three weeks ago, The Scotsman has picked up a win, a loss and a draw. "It's an opportunity to see where we're at as a team when competing against a team a level above."

Of Oldhams starting 11 we're likely to

see their summer signing James Norwood, who's another member of that haunting 2018/19 final. Norwood has netted seven times so far this National League campaign.

This will be the sides first ever meeting in the FA Cup, The Latics reached the FA Cup semi final in 1913, two rounds further than the Exiles have ever made it.

Both sides had a successful 2018/19 FA Cup having Oldham reach the 4th round after beating Premier League side Fulham and Newport making the 5th round having beaten Leicester City and Middlesbrough.

The two clubs last meeting came in February 2022 in a six goal thriller including a straight red card at Rodney Parade.

Of the two sides Oldham come away better in the head to head with nine wins compared to Newport's four.
