Coughlan revisits The Stags and will be looking to ruin their undefeated 16-league games streak

Match Preview- Mansfield Town Vs Newport County

Newport will look to make it back-to-back away wins as they travel to promotion contenders Mansfield Town on Saturday. The Stags sit pretty in 3rd with not a single loss this season, They'll be looking to continue this fine form as they host the Exiles this weekend.

As of the weekend, Newport were struggling with injuries with the likes of Wildig, Seberry, Palmer-Holden, Lewis, Clarke (The list truly does go on)...all out. But a point on the board against MK Dons on Saturday should be a result that Newport fans are pleased with. The Exiles will be hoping to push on from their recent results and make themselves undefeated in three games for the first time since the start of September.

Mansfield Town:

Mansfield Town were established in 1897. They play their games at The One Call Stadium which is the oldest professional football ground in the world. Like Newport, the Stags were promoted to Sky Bet League Two after the 2012/13 season. Together they're the longest-reigning League Two sides after now facing their eleventh consecutive season in the division.

Mansfield's last five league games:

Away to Salford: 2-1 Win

Home to Walsall: 2-1Win

Away to Harrogate: 4-1 Win

Away to Notts County: 4-1 Win

Home to AFC Wimbledon: 0-0 Draw

Their Season so far:

  • The Stags have played 16, winning 8 and drawing 8.

  • Themselves and Portsmouth are the last remaining undefeated sides of the English Football League.

  • Their target man is Davis Keillor-Dunn who's netted nine times this season.

  • Already out of the FA Cup, Lost in the first round to Wrexham.

Contributed to both sides-

Harry Charsley- The Exiles signed Charsley on an 18-month contract at the start of 2023, meaning he stays until the end of this season. Since then he has scored 4 league goals, two of them being from this season.

Charsley joined Mansfield back in January 2020 for the remainder of the 2019/20 season (abandoned due to COVID). Charsley then signed an 18-month contract in which he made 77 appearances, scoring 7 goals and providing 8 assists.

Aaron Lewis- Just last season Aaron Lewis was playing for the Exiles. He was with the club for three seasons, scoring three league goals. He contributed to Newport's play-off season in 2021. Newport offered him a contract at the end of last season, which he declined.

He has already scored his first goal for the Stags in what was an absolute beauty against Accrington Stanley.

Graham Coughlan- Coughlan became manager of Mansfield Town in December 2019, However, the position was short-lived as he left the club in late October 2020 after a poor start to the 2020/21 campaign.

Last Time Out:

The last time the two teams faced each other was in April 2023 at Rodney Parade, in which the away side went home with all three points in a 2-1 win. Hiram Boateng took the lead for the Stags after just 24 minutes in which the Newport defence allowed him to slip through to break the deadlock.

Mansfield doubled their lead in the 73rd minute through James Gale who scored his first professional goal. An error from Aaron Lewis allowed the Stags to get away, in which Gale took his shot before the Newport defence had time to get back, his shot beat keeper Joe Day to make it 2 nil to the visitors.

Newport got a goal back in the 86th minute through Aaron Wildig who did well to beat his man and head in a cross from Aaron Lewis but it was too late for the hosts to get anything from the game, as the match ended 2-1 Mansfield.

Head To Head:

Newport and Mansfield have faced each other on over 40 occasions, dating back to the 1930s. The Exiles don't have the best record against the Stags having lost 20 times.

Saturday's fixture will be the 23rd meeting between the two sides in just over a decade.

The most memorable game against the Stags for Newport fans will be THAT Play Off Semi Final 2nd Leg at Field Mill, in which after 120 minutes played went to penalties in which Newport won 5-3.

This was the first time since 1939 that Newport had 'won' away at Mansfield.

Who will get the three points?

  • Mansfield Town

  • Newport County
